Statue of Ninoy Aquino

Benigno Simeon “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. was elected Mayor of Concepcion in 1956 at only 22 years old. Five years later, he became the nation’s youngest vice-governor at 27. In 1961, at age 29, he was elected Governor of Tarlac Province, and by 1966, he had risen to become Secretary-General of the Liberal Party. The following year, in 1967, he made history as the youngest elected senator of the Philippines at 34 years old.

A victim of Martial Law declared in 1972, Ninoy’s life was cut short by his assassination in 1983. His widow, Corazon “Cory” Cojuangco Aquino, would later be catapulted to the Presidency of the Philippines (1986–1992), becoming the country’s first female president and a global symbol of democracy.
